Why You Can’t Just Use ChatGPT for Med-Legal Work

This comes up a lot: “Why not just use ChatGPT? It’s cheaper.”

Here’s why that’s risky:

  • Generally speaking, it’s not HIPAA-compliant. Without a Business Associates Agreement (BAA) in place, you legally can’t enter Protected Health Information (PHI) into the platform — even by accident.
  • You don’t control the data. You don’t know where it goes, how it’s stored, or who can access it unless you're tech-savvy.
  • ChatGPT is a horizontal AI. It tries to be everything for everyone, it can help you write a poem or draft an email, but it’s not built specifically for physicians doing medical-legal work.

There are also some less obvious limitations:

  • Upload limits. Free and Pro versions of ChatGPT don’t support uploading large medical PDFs. Even with plugins or third-party add-ons, you’re still jumping through hoops — and still violating HIPAA.
  • Small context window. These models have a limit on how much information they can “remember” at once, which is called a context window. That’s a problem when you’re working with thousands of pages of records.
